Sinner’s Ex-Trainer Blames Former Physio for Doping Scandal

The fallout from Jannik Sinner’s doping case continues, as his former physical trainer, Umberto Ferrara, has publicly spoken out for the first time, shifting blame onto the tennis star’s ex-physiotherapist, Giacomo Naldi.

The world No. 1 and three-time Grand Slam champion received a three-month suspension after testing positive twice for clostebol, a banned substance. WADA accepted that Sinner was inadvertently contaminated, leading to a negotiated suspension instead of a longer ban.

Ferrara, who was dismissed along with Naldi following the controversy, has now broken his silence. Speaking to Gazzetta dello Sport, he denied any personal wrongdoing while pointing fingers at Naldi:

“I was well aware that clostebol was banned and always kept it safely stored. I suggested Naldi use it for a cut but was clear that it should never come into contact with Jannik.”

Ferrara insists that Naldi ignored these warnings and went on to treat Sinner without gloves or washing his hands after using the spray.

“With hindsight, I would have handled things differently, but I am not responsible for the actions of others. This entire situation has harmed me due to the bad faith of some.”

Ferrara has since joined the team of Matteo Berrettini, while Sinner prepares for his comeback.

Sinner’s Return Set for May 4

Sinner’s suspension ends on May 4, just in time for the Italian Open in Rome (May 7–18). Before heading to Roland Garros, he will also compete in the Hamburg ATP event.

The reigning Australian Open and US Open champion reached the French Open semi-finals last year and will be looking to reclaim his dominance on clay when the Grand Slam begins on May 25.
