Chris Mason Dismisses Bobby George’s Claim About Luke Littler vs. Prime Phil Taylor
Former darts pro Chris Mason has strongly rejected Bobby George’s claim that Luke Littler would have outclassed Phil Taylor even at his peak.
George, a 30-year legend of the BDO, recently suggested that a prime Taylor wouldn’t have been able to handle Littler’s scoring power and finishing ability. Speaking to talkSPORT, George said:
“Taylor was a great player, don’t get me wrong. But I don’t think he would have beaten Littler, even in his heyday. His scoring power is so good, and his finishing is unbelievable. The only way Taylor would have a chance is if you took double 10 off the board because that’s what Littler hits every time.
“Taylor was great, but not as good as Littler. That’s my opinion.”
However, Mason, a former rival of Taylor, completely disagreed, calling George’s statement “absolute b******s.” Speaking to Online Darts, he insisted that the numbers prove otherwise.
“This game gives us numbers. I’ve seen players crumble under pressure, but Taylor never did—he only got stronger.”
Mason pointed to Taylor’s historic tournament averages, which still compare with today’s best, despite playing on what he called “inferior boards.”
“Taylor had tournament averages of 108 and 105. He averaged 113 against me over 24 legs. This isn’t an opinion—just do some research. If anything, in this era, with even more competition, Taylor could have been even better.”
George also advised Taylor, now 64 and retired due to health issues, to avoid an exhibition match against Littler, warning:
“Playing a guy that’s one of the greatest in the world right now? He’s got no chance. If he’s doing it for the money, fair enough—take the bees and honey.”
Despite the debate, fans remain eager to see how Taylor, widely regarded as darts’ GOAT, would have fared against Littler in his prime.
