Coco Gauff entered the Miami Open hoping to regain her form after early exits in her previous three WTA 1000 tournaments. The world No. 3 started the season strong, winning the United Cup and reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals but struggled in Qatar, Dubai, and Indian Wells.

A Shocking First-Round Scoreline

In her Miami Open opener, Gauff delivered a stunning 6-0, 6-0 victory over Sofia Kenin, a result that left tennis legends Boris Becker and Andrea Petkovic baffled.

“Andrea, explain this to me,” Becker said on the Becker & Petkovic Podcast.
“Kenin is a Grand Slam champion, she just beat Petra Kvitova, and then she loses 0-0 to Gauff. How does that happen?”

Petkovic admitted she couldn’t comprehend it either:

“I’ve tried to understand results like this for 10, 20 years, and I still don’t get it.”

Despite Kenin’s recent win over two-time Wimbledon champion Kvitova, she never found her rhythm against Gauff and was overwhelmed from the start.

Gauff’s Miami Open Journey

After her dominant opening win, Gauff reached the fourth round with another strong performance against Maria Sakkari. However, her run came to an end against Magda Linette, who pulled off a surprising 6-4, 6-4 upset.

One key factor in Gauff’s defeat was her serving struggles:

Match Aces Double Faults First Serve % Win % on First Serve Win % on Second Serve
4R vs. Linette 3 12 51% 73% 55%
3R vs. Sakkari 1 3 70% 64% 73%
2R vs. Kenin 1 2 71% 84% 50%

Her 12 double faults against Linette marked her worst serving performance of the tournament.

What’s Next for Gauff?

Gauff now turns her attention to the Stuttgart Open, beginning April 14, where she will compete as the No. 3 seed in a stacked field featuring:

  • Mirra Andreeva (5)

Having won just two matches in her previous two Stuttgart appearances, Gauff will be aiming for a deeper run this time.
