Boris Becker has expressed a cautiously optimistic view on Alexander Zverev potentially hiring Toni Nadal as part of his coaching team, while highlighting one key concern that remains unresolved. The German tennis legend, speaking on his *Becker Petkovic* podcast, praised the prospective partnership, suggesting it could be a “top choice” for Zverev, especially given Toni’s track record of guiding Rafael Nadal to 16 Grand Slam titles. Becker noted the value of Toni’s experience and the rigorous “Spanish school” approach, which could provide the discipline Zverev needs to break through for his first Major title. He also hinted at the potential for Rafael Nadal to serve as a mentor, calling the combination “very interesting” and expressing hope that it materializes.

However, Becker’s enthusiasm comes with a caveat. He emphasized the importance of Zverev clarifying whether Toni, or any new coach, can commit to traveling to major tournaments, a question he previously raised in December 2024. Becker pointed out that Zverev’s current setup, heavily reliant on his father Alexander Sr. and brother Mischa, has not yielded a Grand Slam victory despite working with high-profile coaches like Ivan Lendl and Juan Carlos Ferrero. He suggested that a new coach’s availability at events like Wimbledon or the US Open is critical, stating, “That’s the only question mark for him. As soon as he has solved and clarified that, we can talk about it.” With Zverev currently training at the Rafa Nadal Academy in Mallorca and no official confirmation of a deal, Becker’s stance reflects both support and a pragmatic concern about logistics as the Canadian Open approaches on July 27, 2025.
