Carlos Alcaraz has officially taken over the No. 1 position in the 2025 ATP Race, overtaking Jannik Sinner after the Italian’s two-month suspension. It marks a major shift in this season’s standings, following a dynamic stretch that included deep runs at the Monte-Carlo Masters.
What is the ATP Race?
The ATP Race ranks players based solely on points earned during the 2025 season, starting from January. It determines who qualifies for the prestigious ATP Finals at year’s end.
Alcaraz Rises Amid Sinner’s Absence
Despite only playing one tournament this season, Sinner held onto the top spot for 10 weeks after his Australian Open triumph. His lead persisted thanks to inconsistent performances from key challengers — until now.
Alcaraz capitalized on the opportunity by winning the Monte-Carlo Masters, his sixth tournament of the season, which featured three Masters 1000 events. His path to the title included wins over Arthur Fils and Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, before defeating an injured Lorenzo Musetti in the final. It’s Alcaraz’s first title in Monte-Carlo and a clear sign of his momentum on clay.
Zverev Holds Third, but Struggles Persist
Alexander Zverev rounds out the top three, despite a mediocre 6–6 record since his runner-up finish in Melbourne. An early loss to Matteo Berrettini in Monte-Carlo adds to his woes. However, he heads to Munich — a tournament he’s previously won twice — with hopes of reigniting his season. A title there could see him leapfrog Sinner.
Shifting Positions in the Top 10
- Jack Draper and Novak Djokovic both exited early in Monte-Carlo. Djokovic, currently inactive, risks falling further.
- Alex de Minaur climbs to sixth and could surpass Djokovic with just one more win in Barcelona.
- Jakub Mensik, the Miami Open champion, missed Monte-Carlo but will debut on clay in Munich — his first-ever tour-level match on the surface.
- Alejandro Davidovich Fokina is enjoying a career-best run, having reached finals in Delray Beach and Acapulco and a semifinal in Monte-Carlo. His clay-court prowess could soon push him into the top 10.
- Felix Auger-Aliassime and Ben Shelton round out the top 10, but both exited early in Monte-Carlo. They’ll look to bounce back in Munich.
Battle Outside the Top 10
The race is tight just beyond the top 10. Five players are separated by just 25 points:
- Holger Rune (1,020)
- Stefanos Tsitsipas (1,005)
- Tommy Paul (1,000)
- Lorenzo Musetti (1,000)
- Taylor Fritz (995)
Musetti’s runner-up finish in Monte-Carlo gave him a much-needed boost. Tsitsipas reached the quarterfinals but couldn’t defend his title. Rune and Tsitsipas are active this week, giving them a chance to break into the top 10.
