Tennis sensation Carlos Alcaraz is preparing for a high-stakes showdown at the Australian Open quarterfinal, where he’ll face Novak Djokovic, utilizing the same tactics that have helped him win three of their seven past encounters.
Djokovic’s recent dip in match play has led to a drop in his ranking, placing him as the seventh seed and making him vulnerable to tough early draws in Grand Slams.
As Alcaraz eyes his path to a potential 25th major title, he acknowledges that Djokovic, who he candidly admits is far from the ideal quarterfinal opponent, stands in his way.
“Well, this is not the right player to face in a quarterfinal,” Alcaraz said. “In a Grand Slam, from the quarterfinals onward, you’re up against the best players in the world. If it wasn’t Djokovic, it could be another top player. But whether it’s Novak in the quarters or the semis, it doesn’t really change anything for me.”
He added, “The only time I’d probably approach it differently is if it were a final. But for the quarterfinal, I’m going in with the same mindset I had in our previous matches. Let’s see how it goes—he still has to win his matches, and either way, both players are amazing. If it’s Novak, I’ll approach it the same as before.”
Alcaraz is determined to improve on his last meeting with Djokovic, where he fell short in the gold medal match at the Paris Olympics. However, he previously bested Djokovic in the Wimbledon final, adding an extra layer of intrigue to their upcoming clash.
