Following his hard-fought win at the Monte Carlo Masters, Carlos Alcaraz shared a candid moment with the media, revealing that he’s been dealing with personal struggles over the past month. While the 21-year-old Spanish star chose not to disclose specific details, he acknowledged the challenges he faced both on and off the court.
On Sunday, Alcaraz secured his second title of the year by defeating Lorenzo Musetti 3-6, 6-1, 6-0 in the Monte Carlo final. The victory marked a return to form after a less-than-stellar Sunshine Double campaign, where he lost in the Indian Wells semifinals and suffered a surprise early exit in Miami.
“It’s Been a Really Difficult Month”
Reflecting on his recent journey, Alcaraz expressed pride in how he managed adversity throughout the week.
“It has been a really difficult week with a lot of tough situations. I’m really proud of myself for how I handled everything. The past month has been hard for me both off the court and during matches, so to come here and see all the hard work pay off—it makes me really, really happy,” Alcaraz said.
Focused on Tennis Amid Distraction
When asked to elaborate on the nature of his personal difficulties, the four-time Grand Slam champion declined to go into detail, but admitted that staying mentally focused on tennis had been a struggle.
“I don’t want to speak about it publicly, but I can say that I was struggling just to step on the court. It’s been hard to find the right mindset, to play freely, and to focus on what really matters. But I’m finding my way again,” he added.
Climbing the Rankings Again
With his Monte Carlo triumph, Alcaraz is set to leapfrog Alexander Zverev and reclaim the No. 2 spot in the ATP rankings—his highest position since October of last year.
Now, the Spaniard shifts his attention to the Barcelona Open, where he enters as the top seed and will look to capture a third consecutive title at the event.
