Casper Ruud Defends Jannik Sinner Amid Doping Suspension: “He’s Innocent”
Casper Ruud has spoken out in strong support of fellow ATP star Jannik Sinner, calling the Italian “innocent” and describing the recent doping saga as “extremely unfortunate.”
Sinner, a three-time Grand Slam champion, tested positive twice for the banned substance clostebol, a steroid. It was later determined that the substance entered his system through accidental contamination—specifically, during a massage from his physio, who failed to wear gloves. The ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency) accepted this explanation and opted against issuing a provisional or full suspension.
However, the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision, arguing that Sinner should bear at least partial responsibility. After negotiations, the case was settled with a three-month suspension, running from February 9 to May 4, 2025.
Speaking from Monte Carlo, Ruud voiced his full confidence in Sinner’s integrity:
“I always considered him innocent. It’s extremely unfortunate how the substance got into his system,” Ruud said.
Sinner Reflects on Suspension and Return
In a recent interview with Sky Sports, Sinner reiterated his belief that he had been wronged by the process.
“I’m innocent. What happened to me was unfair,” said the 22-year-old. “I don’t know how I’ll be received when I return. Coming back with all this attention won’t be easy. But those closest to me—my team, my family, my friends—have no doubt about the truth.”
Sinner is set to return just in time for his home tournament in Rome, where he’s expected to receive strong fan support. After Rome, he’ll continue his clay season at the Hamburg Open, building up to the French Open later in May.
