Coco Gauff Disappointed After Miami Open Exit, Eyes Clay Season for a Rebound

Coco Gauff didn’t hold back her frustration after a lackluster round-of-16 performance at the Miami Open, suffering a surprising 4-6, 4-6 defeat to world No. 34 Magda Linette.

After dominating Sofia Kenin with a double-bagel win and securing a solid victory over Maria Sakkari, many believed the 21-year-old’s recent struggles were behind her. However, her inconsistency resurfaced against Linette, as she racked up 12 double faults and 45 unforced errors.

Reflecting on the defeat, the world No. 3 was candid about her disappointment.

“It wasn’t great today. It hasn’t been the last few weeks—I’m trying to figure that out. Definitely not happy about it… just one of those days when I felt awful in everything on the court,” Gauff admitted.

Gauff Downplays Concerns Over Form

After early exits in Doha and Dubai, Gauff arrived at Indian Wells insisting there was no reason to panic.

“I don’t know, everybody makes a bigger deal than what it is… I lost two matches. I’ll lose more matches back to back, it’s going to happen,” she explained.

She managed to reach the round of 16 in Indian Wells before falling to Belinda Bencic, but her Miami Open loss has reignited concerns about her form.

Ahead of the Miami tournament, Gauff dismissed speculation that anything was wrong beyond the natural ups and downs of competition.

“Sometimes when I don’t do well, people think there’s something personally wrong with me. I’m like, ‘I just lost a couple of matches! I’m chillin,’” she said.

With disappointing results in the Middle East and the Sunshine Double behind her, Gauff is now looking ahead to the clay season. She is set to begin her campaign in Stuttgart in mid-April, hoping for a deep run after making just one quarterfinal in her last three appearances there.
