During the trophy ceremony, Pegula reflected on her personal connection to the area and the role it played in her development as a tennis player:
“I grew up in Hilton Head, South Carolina, going to Smith Stearns Tennis Academy. I learned how to play tennis there on the green clay — actually where the old Family Circle Cup used to be,” she shared.
“I also spent a couple of years training here on Daniel Island in my early 20s. So to come back after a long two weeks in Miami and win the title here is just incredible. Thank you, guys.”
The victory adds another significant title to Pegula’s résumé and reinforces her presence among the WTA’s top stars heading into the European clay-court season.
