You know how time flies when you’re deeply focused? That’s exactly what Coco Gauff is experiencing right now as she stays locked in on her mission at the Australian Open. Gauff recently cruised through a third-round match against Leylah Fernandez, winning 6-3, 6-2, but her success isn’t just about the scores—it’s about how she manages the pressure of back-to-back matches. So, how does she keep things chill?

After her second-round win over Jodie Burrage, Gauff shared insights into her pre-match routine for the first time. During the post-match press conference, she revealed that her boyfriend is part of her daily activities. “I usually just go to the gym in the morning at the hotel, do something light, and then just sit in my hotel room. Today, I was just watching tennis and talking to my boyfriend, and that’s about it,” she explained, showing how he plays a role in helping her stay relaxed.

Gauff has been in stellar form, winning all eight matches this season without dropping a set, including three wins at the Australian Open. Reflecting on her win against Fernandez, Gauff noted, “It was harder this time because she knew what to expect. She played a little differently than at the United Cup,” despite riding an impressive 16-set winning streak. The only real challenge was the late start time of her match.

The match was scheduled for 7 PM at Margaret Court Arena, giving Gauff the entire day to wait—a potential recipe for anxiety. But her routine helped her stay grounded. “Same routine: went to the gym, watched tennis, talked to my boyfriend. I don’t really order room service, so that’s about it,” she shared in her post-match press conference.

“When you play at night, the day feels long, and then suddenly it’s 3:30, and it’s time to leave. Everything starts to feel fast,” Gauff added. While many players might let the wait ramp up their nerves, Gauff—who teamed up with coach Matt Daly during the 2024 Asian Swing—stayed calm and focused.

Her pre-match routine also used to involve careful dietary choices. When she won the 2023 US Open, she shared that she avoided her favorite mushroom pasta before matches, as it caused stomach aches. “I love mushrooms in pasta; I just don’t eat them pre-match,” she explained. It’s a small precaution she takes, even if it’s partly in her head. “I’m usually not superstitious—just with that,” she added with a laugh.

But post-match? That’s a different story. Gauff knows how to unwind.

After her first-round win at the Australian Open, Gauff took a trip to the movies during her two-day break. She watched Mufasa: The Lion King and shared her thoughts on Instagram. “Lol, one thing about me is if I play first, I’ll most likely be going to a movie after. This was good! I enjoyed it,” she wrote. Gauff’s love for movies is well-known—she recently gushed over Interstellar, calling it “amazing.”
