Holger Rune’s 2025 season has started much like his 2024 campaign ended—filled with inconsistency and uncertainty. After breaking into the elite ranks in late 2022 and reaching the ATP Top 5 the following year, the Danish star has struggled to maintain his momentum. Since his breakthrough title at the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters, Rune has faced setbacks that have slowed his progress.

Determined to regain his competitive edge, Rune has made several coaching changes in search of the right formula for success. While signs of improvement have emerged this season, he missed a significant opportunity at the 2025 Australian Open, falling to Jannik Sinner in the round of 16. Though the world No. 1 has been nearly unstoppable on hard courts—securing back-to-back Australian Open titles—Darren Cahill later revealed that Sinner had been battling illness that day and was close to retiring.

Now focused on turning his season around, Rune has set his sights on strong performances at the first two Masters 1000 tournaments of the year—Indian Wells and Miami.

His Indian Wells campaign will begin against Corentin Moutet, who battled past Australia’s Jordan Thompson in three sets during the first round. The Frenchman, who defeated Rune twice in early 2022, knows he faces a tougher challenge this time.

“When I played and beat him the first two times, Holger was a completely different player,” Moutet admitted. “He’s made an impressive rise over the past three years, but I have some ideas on how to trouble him. I believe I can win.”
