Darts Star Dom Taylor Breaks Silence Over Ban Following Failed Drugs Test
Darts professional Dom Taylor has spoken publicly for the first time after receiving a ban following a failed drugs test, insisting the positive result was the result of an honest mistake rather than any attempt to gain an advantage.
Taylor confirmed that the suspension was handed down after routine testing detected a prohibited substance, with the player accepting the ruling and apologising to fans, sponsors and fellow competitors.
In a statement, Taylor explained that the substance was linked to medication taken away from competition and admitted he failed to complete the necessary paperwork required under darts’ anti-doping regulations.
“I hold my hands up and take responsibility,” Taylor said. “I would never knowingly do anything to cheat or gain an unfair edge. This has been incredibly hard to take, but I respect the process and the decision.”
The ban means Taylor will be sidelined from competitive action for a period, missing several events on the professional circuit overseen by the Professional Darts Corporation. While the suspension is understood to be temporary, it represents a major setback at a crucial stage of his career.
Anti-doping controls have become increasingly stringent in recent years, particularly around major tournaments such as the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace, with players required to declare all medications and supplements in advance.
Taylor admitted the situation has been a harsh lesson and urged other professionals to be meticulous with their paperwork to avoid similar issues.
“I wouldn’t wish this on anyone,” he added. “I’ve learned the hard way how important it is to check everything, no matter how minor it seems.”
Reaction among fans has been mixed, with some expressing disappointment while others have praised Taylor for his honesty and transparency. Several fellow players have also highlighted how easy it can be to fall foul of the rules without malicious intent.
Taylor says he plans to use the enforced break to reset mentally and physically, with his focus firmly on returning to the oche once the suspension ends.
“I’ll come back stronger and more determined,” he said. “This doesn’t define me — how I respond to it does.”
The PDC has confirmed the ban but has declined to comment further, stating that the matter was handled in line with its established anti-doping procedures. 🎯
