Jannik Sinner’s Ban: A Mere Formality? Fans Rejoice as Training Continues
Jannik Sinner’s three-month suspension from professional tennis may not be as restrictive as initially thought. While the World No. 1 was handed a ban by WADA on February 15 for testing positive for clostebol, new details suggest that his time away from the sport will be far less impactful than many assumed.
Sinner Can Continue Training During Ban
Fans were initially under the impression that Sinner would be completely sidelined from the sport during his suspension, which runs from February 9 to May 4. However, recent reports from Tennis Italiano confirm that Sinner is allowed to train during this period—just not at ATP, ITF, WTA, or Grand Slam-associated facilities.
According to ITIA regulations, players under suspension may still practice privately with their personal teams. This means Sinner can maintain his fitness and form, ensuring a seamless return to competition once his ban ends.
Minimal Impact on His Career
Despite missing several major tournaments, including the Qatar Open, Indian Wells, Miami Open, Monte-Carlo Masters, and Madrid Open, Sinner’s ranking remains largely unaffected. While he will drop 1,600 ranking points, he will still retain the No. 1 spot by the time he returns.
Additionally, his comeback will be perfectly timed for his home event in Italy on May 7, followed by a highly anticipated appearance at Roland Garros starting on May 25.
Sinner’s Statement: A Relieved Acceptance
Acknowledging WADA’s decision, Sinner expressed relief at the resolution of a case that had been “hanging over [him] for nearly a year.” In a statement via his lawyers, he said:
“I have always accepted that I am responsible for my team and realize WADA’s strict rules are an important protection for the sport I love.”
He further explained that accepting the three-month sanction allowed him to put the matter behind him, rather than waiting for a lengthy legal battle that could have stretched into the end of 2025.
What’s Next for Sinner?
With training privileges still intact, Sinner’s suspension appears to be more of an off-season break rather than a significant career setback. Fans are now eagerly awaiting his return, wondering if he will come back stronger than ever.
