Rybakina Moves On in Doha Amid Coaching Controversy
Elena Rybakina advanced to the quarterfinals of the Qatar TotalEnergies Open, defeating Rebecca Sramkova 7-6(1), 6-2. However, her victory was overshadowed by the WTA’s decision to uphold the suspension of former coach Stefano Vukov.
The No. 5 seed expressed frustration but kept her focus on the court:
“I’m just disappointed with the situation and how the process went. I’m always focusing on my matches and want to perform as best as I can.”
WTA Upholds Vukov Suspension
Rybakina initially parted ways with Vukov in 2024, before a surprise announcement that he would rejoin her team in 2025. However, the WTA’s investigation into a potential breach of the Code of Conduct led to his ongoing suspension.
A WTA statement confirmed the investigation’s conclusion but maintained Vukov’s ban, citing confidentiality concerns.
“To protect the confidentiality and integrity of the investigation and its findings, the WTA will not provide further details.”
Following these developments, Rybakina is now working with Davide Sanguinetti.
What’s Next?
Rybakina, a 2022 Wimbledon champion, will face the winner of Iga Świątek vs. Linda Nosková in the Doha quarterfinals. Despite the off-court distractions, she remains focused on securing another deep tournament run.
