Novak Djokovic has survived a wild comeback to defeat Rafael Nadal 6-1 6-4 in what is widely expected to be their final meeting.

Djokovic took their head-to-head record to 31-29 with an enthralling straight sets win that didn’t tell the full story of Nadal’s late fightback.

Philippe Chatrier Arena at Roland Garros exploded as Nadal took four consecutive games in the second set to come back from the dead.

Wrong move Novak.

Tennis commentator Mary Carillo said on the global TV broadcast: “This is madness”.

Australia’s Chris Burton has won silver in the men’s equestrian eventing individual jumping final after a faultless run at Versailles.

Buron, riding Shadow Man, went to the top of the competition with his final run, but he was denied the gold when final runner German Michael Jung also nailed it.

Burton was made to endure an agonising wait sitting in the gold medal position, but his face at the end of the competition showed his mindset was that he won silver rather than lost the gold.

It caps an extraordinary three-day event for Burton, who shocked competitors on a rain-soaked opening day to sit third in dressage.

British diver Tom Daley refused to rule out competing at a sixth Olympics on Monday, saying 2028 would be a “second home Games” for the now Los Angeles resident.

The 30-year-old won silver in Paris with partner Noah Williams in the 10m synchronised platform to give him a fifth medal in five Olympics.

Daley gave up diving for two years after winning gold in Tokyo in 2021 but he returned to the pool at the request of his six-year-old son Robbie.

Daley stressed that he would take some time to decide his future, but he said “you never know” if another Olympic appearance in LA was a possibility.

Sewage in the Seine hits triathlon

Olympic organisers cancelled a second day of triathlon training in the River Seine on Monday due to water pollution, increasing uncertainty over whether the men’s and women’s races will go ahead as scheduled in the coming days.

The men’s race is set to take place tomorrow night (AEST), with organisers set to make a last-minute decision when they have reviewed the latest laboratory results overnight.

The waterway is still polluted after heavy rain storms on Friday during the opening ceremony in Paris and again on Saturday, which led to discharges of raw sewage.

Aussie women remain unbeaten in Rugby 7s

Australia has maintained its unbeaten start to the Olympic women’s sevens tournament and locked up top spot in its pool after beating a feisty Irish side at Stade de France.

After scoring points at will on the opening day against Great Britain and South Africa, Australia spent large chunks of the game against Ireland grimly defending their line as they held on for a 19-14 win.

The quarterfinals begin early tomorrow morning.

Titmus still the same ‘goofy girl from Tassie’

Another night of red-hot competition is in the offing in the pool, where the best swimmers on the planet will compete for five titles.

The last race of the night sees Ariarne Titmus attempt to add the 200m freestyle crown to her dominant 400m triumph, when she blew away rivals Summer McIntosh and Katie Ledecky to retain her title.

The 23-year-old Titmus is the favourite at 200m – she is the reigning champion and world record-holder.

Her biggest threat is fellow Australian Mollie O’Callaghan, who boasted the fastest time ever until Titmus smashed it in June.

‘Inexplicable’ effort rocks the Opals

The Opals have just suffered a huge blow to start their bid for another Olympic Games medal.

The Aussie side came in with high expectations, but has been sent crashing back to Earth with turnovers and missed free-throws crucial in the 75-62 loss to the African champions.

“This is just inexplicable really,” stunned commentator Jeff Taylor said. “They’re playing hard but they’re struggling from the free-throw line.
