Elena Rybakina’s Struggles Continue as Top-10 Status Hangs in the Balance
Elena Rybakina has been a perplexing case this season. While the former Wimbledon champion hasn’t played poorly, she also hasn’t quite reached the level she likely expects of herself. Now, after failing to defend her Miami Open points from last year, she faces the prospect of dropping out of the top 10 entirely.
Rybakina reached the Miami Open final in both 2023 and 2024, only to fall short against Petra Kvitova and Danielle Collins. However, this time, an early exit has left her vulnerable in the rankings. As things stand in the live WTA rankings, she will at least drop to No. 9, with Emma Navarro and Paula Badosa lurking close behind.
If both Navarro and Badosa advance to the fourth round, Rybakina would slip out of the top 10 altogether. Of the two, Navarro appears the greater threat, with her next challenge coming against Emma Raducanu in the third round. Meanwhile, Badosa faces Victoria Mboko but remains an uncertainty due to a recurring back injury.
More Pressure on the Horizon
Rybakina’s ranking situation is further complicated by the rise of Diana Shnaider, who could send her tumbling even further if she wins the title. On the bright side, Daria Kasatkina’s early loss to Hailey Baptiste provided some buffer, but the road ahead remains treacherous.
With the European clay-court swing approaching, Rybakina finds herself at an additional disadvantage. She is not scheduled to play Stuttgart, meaning she won’t have an opportunity to defend points there. While players like Karolina Muchova, who barely played on clay last year, may also struggle in the rankings, Rybakina’s trajectory is concerning. Just a year ago, she was firmly in the top three, competing alongside Iga Swiatek and Aryna Sabalenka for WTA dominance. Now, she faces a steep decline.
Battling Adversity On and Off the Court
Rybakina’s struggles can be traced back to the end of last season when illness and injuries forced her to miss significant time. While she managed title runs in Abu Dhabi and Stuttgart, those victories came amid withdrawals and ongoing health concerns.
Compounding matters is the controversy surrounding her former coach, Stefano Vukov, who has been banned for a season following a WTA investigation. Many observers noted that Rybakina appeared mentally drained during her recent loss to Ashlyn Krueger, raising concerns that the off-court turmoil is taking a toll on her performance.
As she prepares for the upcoming clay-court season and the Billie Jean King Cup, Rybakina needs answers—and fast. Without a turnaround, her ranking slide could continue, making her once-secure spot among the WTA elite a thing of the past.
