Elena Rybakina has parted ways with her longtime fitness coach, Azuz Simcich, who announced the news on social media. His departure adds to the growing list of changes in Rybakina’s team following the recent suspension of her coach, Stefano Vukov.
Vukov was handed a one-year ban last week for violating the WTA’s Code of Conduct after a lengthy investigation into allegations of harassment and abuse. Despite a no-contact directive, he remained involved in Rybakina’s camp by helping to bring in Davide Sanguinetti as his temporary replacement.
These disruptions come at a challenging time for Rybakina, who recently reached the semifinals in Dubai, where she lost to Mirra Andreeva, and the quarterfinals in Doha, where she was defeated by Iga Swiatek. While she remains competitive, the ongoing turbulence surrounding her team has created additional distractions.
Reflecting on his time with Rybakina, Simcich shared a farewell message:
“After an incredible journey alongside Elena, it’s time to move on. I’m deeply grateful for the experiences, challenges, and unforgettable moments we shared. Wishing you nothing but success and happiness in your future endeavors.”
Rennae Stubbs previously praised Simcich’s impact on Rybakina’s game, particularly in improving her movement and court coverage. “I think he’s improved her movement so much out of the corners of the court… it’s something he said they’ve worked really hard on, and you can see it,” Stubbs noted on her podcast in 2023.
Stubbs also reacted to the recent coaching shake-ups, criticizing the situation. “You don’t see her coach Goran Ivanisevic deciding after all this time, ‘I’m outta here.’ He’s clearly saying things he’s not okay with. But also the fitness trainer, who’s been there a long, long time… and now he’s gone as well.”
As Rybakina navigates these transitions, her ability to stay focused on the court will be crucial in maintaining her strong form.
