Rick Macci Defends Emma Raducanu After Abu Dhabi Open Exit

Serena Williams’ former coach, Rick Macci, has come to Emma Raducanu’s defense following her first-round exit at the Abu Dhabi Open.

The British star entered 2025 with a new approach, aiming to regain top form by competing in more tournaments rather than prioritizing extended training blocks, as she did last season. However, while she has had an active start to the new year, her results have been inconsistent.

Raducanu’s Early Struggles in 2025

Raducanu’s momentum took a hit when coach Nick Cavaday stepped down due to health reasons. Following her Australian Open campaign, she competed in the Singapore Tennis Open, where she suffered a first-round defeat to Cristina Bucsa.

Her Abu Dhabi Open campaign also ended in disappointment after a tough first-round draw against 2023 Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova, who defeated her in straight sets.

With her recent struggles, Raducanu once again became a target for online criticism. However, Rick Macci quickly shut down the negativity, insisting the 21-year-old still has the potential to return to the top of women’s tennis.

“Everybody will call balls and strikes on how Emma does. Overreaction on steroids.

“When the person calling shots thinks outside the box with somebody who understands how to stimulate confidence, change perspective, and mindset, results and the top 10 are on the horizon.

“She has the talent. If not, the sun will set the same way and lose sets.”

Raducanu Takes Her Time Choosing a New Coach

At the Abu Dhabi Open, Raducanu had Croatian coach Roman Kelecic in her corner—a familiar face from her junior career. However, she has made it clear she is in no rush to make a permanent coaching decision.

“It’s a decision I want to take my time with,” Raducanu said.

“That’s why I haven’t jumped into something straight away—I want to make sure it’s the right fit.

“This period without a coach is teaching me a lot. It’s helping me understand what I value and what I’m looking for in the next person. I don’t have any set plans or decisions yet, but I’ll take the next few weeks to see how I feel before making a choice.”

As Raducanu navigates another transition phase, Macci’s confidence in her abilities serves as a reminder that her best tennis could still be ahead.
