Emma Raducanu has dubbed herself a “black cat” as she prepares to face Ekaterina Alexandrova in the first round of the Australian Open on Tuesday.
The 22-year-old Brit is hoping to claim her first Grand Slam title since her stunning 2021 US Open triumph. Despite battling injuries in recent years, Raducanu remains one of the most dangerous players on the tour when fully fit.
Ahead of her opening match, Raducanu praised her new fitness coach, Yutaka Nakamura, who previously worked with Maria Sharapova, for helping her regain her physical form. She brought Nakamura on board to address her fitness concerns and described their partnership as a vital component of her preparation.
“It’s important that everyone works well together,” Raducanu said. “You spend so much time with the people you work with, so it’s crucial to have a good rapport. Yutaka and I are both very dedicated, and even with our long days, we stay motivated and feed off each other’s energy. It’s great to have someone who shows up every day with the same attitude and commitment.”
Raducanu then playfully referred to herself as a “black cat” when describing her need for personal space. “I’m someone who loves my own space. Some people would describe me as a bit of a black cat. During the day, you’re always around people while on site or training, but I make sure to take time for myself—whether it’s a morning walk, getting coffee, or an evening stroll. I seem to be walking a lot.”
Nakamura’s work has also earned praise from former British tennis player Laura Robson, who spoke highly of his influence after getting to know him during his time with Sharapova.
