Emma Raducanu Receives Support from Former Coach Mark Petchey at Miami Open
Emma Raducanu had a familiar face in her player box during her Miami Open second-round match against Emma Navarro, as Mark Petchey, one of her former coaches, was spotted offering support.
Raducanu Scores First Hard-Court Top-10 Win
On Friday, the world No. 60 secured her biggest win of the season, outlasting No. 8 seed and 2024 US Open semifinalist Navarro 7-6 (6), 2-6, 7-6 (3). This victory marked her third career win over a top-10 player and her first-ever top-10 triumph on hard courts.
Raducanu’s coaching situation has been a topic of discussion in recent weeks. She recently ended her trial period with Vladimir Platenik after just two weeks. Platenik, who was absent from her player box during her opening-round win against Sayaka Ishii, later confirmed to BBC Sport that they had parted ways. He cited Raducanu’s stress and pressure in making the right coaching decisions as a key factor in the split.
Petchey’s Return to Raducanu’s Box
Just two days after parting with Platenik, Petchey, who coached Raducanu in 2021 before her breakthrough, was seen supporting her from the stands. However, according to British tennis journalist James Gray, this is not necessarily a permanent coaching reunion.
Petchey’s Ongoing Support for Raducanu
The 54-year-old former British tennis player has been one of Raducanu’s most vocal defenders, frequently calling out media scrutiny and public criticism of the 2021 US Open champion.
“There’s no doubt that she is misunderstood… She’s already being called a ‘one-slam wonder,’ as if she’ll never win another. That must be incredibly difficult to deal with. People love to take potshots at her, but there’s so much more to her than just being a tennis player,” Petchey told Betway earlier this year.
Raducanu is known for surrounding herself with people she feels comfortable with, and having Petchey in her player box may have positively influenced her performance against Navarro.
