Emma Raducanu makes feelings clear about why it is important for her to continue her studies alongside tennis career
British tennis star Emma Raducanu has made it clear that pursuing her education remains a personal priority, even as she works to return to the top of the sport.
Speaking to The Guardian, Raducanu reflected on the importance of maintaining balance in her life, explaining how academics have always served as a grounding force alongside her tennis career.
“Whether I’ll take my third A-level and go on to a degree, I’m not sure,” Raducanu said. “But I feel like I need some sort of pressure and adrenaline in that sense of my life.”
For Raducanu, studying has always been more than a fallback — it’s a way to stay centered.
“Growing up, I always had tennis as an escape from studying and studying as an escape from tennis. So it wasn’t just my entire life and personality being dependent on this one thing.”
Following a promising run at the Miami Open, Raducanu appears to be regaining confidence and form on the court. But off-court, she’s also taken steps to stay grounded — including a chance meeting with a trusted advisor at the tournament that helped shape her next move.
“Mark was already there, commentating, and I happened to bump into him in a corridor at the Dolphins’ stadium in Miami,” she shared. “He’s someone I trust, and we got to talking. I told him I needed to do this [return to tennis properly], and he said, ‘I can help you around the commitments.’ That’s how it started.”
Raducanu’s commitment to striking a balance between athletic ambition and intellectual growth is a rare stance in professional tennis — and one that continues to resonate with fans and commentators alike.
