Emma Raducanu Accepts Late Wildcard for Qatar Open in Doha

Emma Raducanu has accepted a late wildcard entry for next week’s Qatar Open in Doha, as she looks to end her current losing streak and regain momentum on the WTA Tour.

The British No. 2, currently ranked 56th in the world, will aim to rebound after back-to-back first-round exits in Singapore and Abu Dhabi, following her Australian Open third-round defeat to Iga Swiatek.

Raducanu has decided to extend her stay in the Middle East to compete in this WTA 1000 event, while she continues to assess her long-term coaching options.

Temporary Coaching Setup as Raducanu Takes Her Time

The 22-year-old recently split with coach Nick Cavaday after the Australian Open, with her childhood coach stepping away due to health reasons.

For now, Raducanu is working with a temporary support team, which includes fitness trainer Yutaka Nakamura and Dubai-based Roman Kelecic, who previously coached her earlier in her career.

Speaking to The National, Raducanu explained her deliberate approach in selecting her next coach:

“It’s a decision that I want to take my time with. That’s why I haven’t necessarily jumped into something straight away, because I want to make sure it’s the right fit.”

She added:

“This period where I don’t necessarily have someone is going to teach me a lot—what I want, what I don’t want to look for in the next person.”

Raducanu remains undecided on her next coaching appointment, stating:

“I’m not too sure yet. I haven’t come to any plans or decisions.”

Whoever she ultimately chooses will become her seventh coach since turning professional in 2021.

Tough Competition Awaits in Doha

The Qatar Open will feature a star-studded field, led by world No. 2 Iga Swiatek, who recently dropped just one game against Raducanu at the Australian Open. Swiatek will enter the tournament as the overwhelming favorite, seeking her fourth consecutive title in Doha.

For Raducanu, the WTA 1000 event presents a strong opportunity to gain valuable ranking points and build confidence. She was eliminated in the first round last year, meaning she has no points to defend, which could help her move up the rankings with a deep run in the competition.
