Emma Raducanu is set to return to competition at Indian Wells next week, marking her first appearance since a troubling stalker incident in Dubai.
Reports indicate that the WTA 1000 event in California has offered Raducanu enhanced security following the unsettling encounter last month. During her second-round match in Dubai, a man exhibiting “fixed behavior” toward her appeared at the venue for a second time, having previously approached her the day before.
The individual was swiftly ejected, banned from future WTA events, and later detained by Dubai authorities. While Raducanu chose not to press charges, the man signed a formal agreement to maintain his distance. Despite the incident, the world No. 55 completed her match, falling in straight sets to Karolina Muchova, before returning home. She later addressed the situation on Instagram, thanking her opponent for understanding.
Extra Security Measures in Place
As Raducanu prepares for Indian Wells, The Times reports that she has been offered up to five additional security guards on-site, with some possibly accompanying her off-site. WTA vice president of security Bob Campbell, a former secret service agent, is overseeing arrangements to ensure her safety.
Fans Divided on the Need for Security
Public opinion on the matter remains mixed. A poll conducted by Express Sport revealed that:
- 53% of fans believe Raducanu does not need extra security at tournaments.
- 59% think she should continue competing without taking a break.
- 74% agree that the 2021 US Open champion faces too much scrutiny following her historic Grand Slam victory.
While Raducanu has the option to hire private security, it remains unclear whether she will accept the WTA’s offer.
Indian Wells: A Positive Return?
Despite the recent turmoil, Raducanu has fond memories of Indian Wells. Over the last two years, she has won multiple matches in the California desert, only falling to top-ranked players Aryna Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek.
Although it would be understandable if she opted for more time away, Raducanu has chosen to compete, looking to regain momentum as she continues her 2025 season.
