Emma Raducanu is once again in the spotlight—and dividing opinion.

The 22-year-old Brit, currently ranked No. 49 in the world, recently made two high-profile choices that have sparked debate among fans and commentators alike.

Raducanu pulled out of Great Britain’s Billie Jean King Cup qualifiers earlier this month, citing the need to “look after” her body after a demanding stretch of play. While some praised her for prioritizing her health, others felt she should have represented her country. A poll of Express Sport readers found 42% supported her decision, while 58% believed she should have played.

In another move that’s stirred discussion, Raducanu has reconnected with former coach Mark Petchey. Though currently an informal arrangement, Petchey—who previously worked with her before her breakout US Open win in 2021—has been present during her training block in Los Angeles and joined her team again at the Madrid Open.

Fans are similarly split on this reunion. Fifty-seven percent are in favor of Petchey becoming her full-time coach, while 43% remain unconvinced.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Raducanu addressed their partnership:

“We haven’t made anything formal. It’s pretty informal for now, but it’s going really well. He’s someone I feel I can trust because I’ve known him so long.”

The former US Open champion has struggled with injuries over the past two years, making strategic rest and reliable coaching more important than ever.

Whether these decisions pay off remains to be seen—but they’ve certainly set the stage for a closely watched clay season.
