Emma Raducanu Turns to Classic Literature and Solitude Amidst the Challenges of Tour Life
Emma Raducanu has found comfort in classic literature and solo activities as she navigates the often “lonely” life on the professional tennis circuit.
The 22-year-old British star has been reading Jane Austen’s Emma ahead of her first-round match against reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova at the Abu Dhabi Open.
“I’m reading Emma, but just for pleasure,” Raducanu shared. “It’s not always the easiest read, but I think it’s a great story. And, of course, with the name, I just had to pick it up.”
In addition to literature, the former US Open champion has embraced solitude, frequently opting for solo walks and coffee outings as a way to reflect during her time on tour.
This tournament marks Raducanu’s second event since parting ways with coach Nick Cavaday, who stepped back due to health concerns in the UK. While she has yet to appoint a permanent replacement, she has traveled to the Middle East with her new fitness trainer, Yutaka Nakamura. For the Abu Dhabi Open, she has temporarily reunited with Roman Kelecic, a UAE-based coach.
The collaboration with Kelecic came about unexpectedly after years of no contact.
“He traveled with me when I was 14 or 15 during the junior ITFs,” Raducanu recalled. “We went to all the glamorous places together back then.”
Reflecting on her recent time away from the sport, Raducanu admitted it was a period of introspection and difficult decisions.
“I had a lot of time to think and reflect,” she said. “I had to make some really tough choices.”
She has also found value in solitude, something she has embraced more this season.
“This year, I’ve gone on plenty of solo walks and coffee dates, giving myself time to look inward,” she shared. “I’ve enjoyed it so far, even though being on tour can be a lonely experience.”
Raducanu also spoke about her split from Cavaday, expressing gratitude and support for her former coach.
“Nick is a great person. I’ve known him since I was a young girl, and he’s coached me before, so we worked really well together,” she said.
“Unfortunately, he had to prioritize his health, which I completely understand. I support him fully and wish him a speedy recovery.”
With the Abu Dhabi Open underway and her coaching situation still unresolved, Raducanu remains focused on regaining her form while continuing her search for the right team.
