Emma Raducanu has been cautioned that women’s tennis stars often experience only a brief period at the top of the sport. The British player, who shot to fame after winning the US Open in 2021 at the age of 18, has since faced challenges with injuries and inconsistency that have hindered her progress.
Despite her current ranking of 61st in the WTA standings, Raducanu is still regarded as a marketable figure in the tennis world. However, sport finance expert Dr. Rob Wilson has suggested that even if Raducanu returns to peak performance and wins more Grand Slam titles, her success may only last a few years.
“Emma Raducanu is marketable, but the level of that will come down to sporting performance,” Wilson told Genting Casino. “She certainly has the raw talent, but in women’s tennis, you don’t get the same longevity as you do in men’s tennis with players like Roger Federer or Novak Djokovic—aside from a few exceptions like Steffi Graf, Serena Williams, and Martina Navratilova.”
Wilson pointed out that many female tennis players often have two or three years at the top before their careers take a different turn. “It will be interesting to see if we’re still talking about Emma Raducanu as an elite tennis player in seven or eight years’ time, even if she doesn’t continue to win Grand Slams,” he added.
Raducanu has been a favorite among sponsors since her US Open victory, with brands like Porsche among her high-profile endorsements. There were rumors that she had been dropped by the luxury car manufacturer last year after reports that a car was removed from her possession, but Porsche confirmed that she remains on their roster. Raducanu was later seen with a new vehicle provided by the company.
Despite concerns about her form and results, Wilson believes Raducanu’s marketability remains strong. “Emma Raducanu is a sponsor’s dream,” he said. “She is very recognisable, speaks well, and has the right personality. Sponsors can continue to activate her even when she’s not winning tournaments because of her visibility and appeal.”
Raducanu’s journey through the 2025 Australian Open saw her reach the third round, where she was defeated by World No. 2 Iga Swiatek with a decisive 6-1, 6-0 scoreline.
