Emma Raducanu recently shared her thoughts on last-minute withdrawals ahead of her first-round match against Russian Ekaterina Alexandrova at the Qatar Open, where she received a wildcard entry.

The 2021 US Open champion is set to face Alexandrova again after their recent encounter at the Australian Open, where Raducanu secured a hard-fought victory in two tiebreaks, 7-6(4), 7-6(2). That match saw the Brit struggle with her serve, hitting 15 double faults. Reflecting on her performance, she admitted, “I’m not sure what I changed in my serve today. I will be sure to reflect, look at that, and come back to you.”

In mid-2024, Raducanu was scheduled to play Alexandrova in the first round of Wimbledon, but the Russian withdrew just minutes before the match due to physical issues, allowing Mexican lucky loser Renata Zarazúa to take her place.

When asked whether there should be a minimum time requirement for withdrawals before a walkover is granted, Raducanu expressed her understanding of last-minute retirements, acknowledging the uncertainty players face when dealing with injuries or illness.

“I think it’s difficult because I’ve been on the player’s side. You’re always hoping, when you wake up in the morning, you’re going to feel a lot better,” she said. “Whether it’s with illness, whether it’s with injury. You’re like, ‘Okay, I’m going to see how it is in the morning.’ I think it is good how it is, to be honest. It’s just more having to deal with those consequences.”

Raducanu, who has battled multiple injuries throughout her career, empathized with players who try to push through, only to realize they cannot compete.

The former world No. 10 also confirmed her split from coach Nick Cavaday, ending what had been her longest coaching partnership since her 2021 US Open triumph.

“I’d like to thank Nick for a great partnership over the last year and a bit. Especially being post-surgeries, he helped get me back inside the world’s top 60,” Raducanu said. “I wish him all the best in his next chapter, and no doubt we’ll stay in touch.”
