Petchey Urges Raducanu: Revisit 2021 Technique
Former coach Mark Petchey believes Emma Raducanu’s path to regaining her form lies in revisiting her 2021 US Open winning technique. He suggests focusing on recreating her groundstrokes from that period, rather than addressing concerns about her athleticism or mental strength.
Despite reaching the third round of the Australian Open and facing recent setbacks, Petchey remains confident in Raducanu’s mental fortitude. However, he observes a lack of technical improvement in her rallies.
“If I was Emma, I would go back and watch 2021 and I would try and recreate it personally with the forehand and backhand,” Petchey stated. He believes Raducanu’s struggles against Iga Swiatek at the Australian Open weren’t solely due to an “off day,” but rather a reflection of technical issues.
Petchey emphasized the importance of technical refinement, citing Madison Keys as an example of a player who improved through equipment changes, rather than solely physical development. He argues that Raducanu’s focus should be on rediscovering the form that led to her stunning US Open victory.
