Emma Raducanu in No Rush to Appoint New Coach, Says Laura Robson

British tennis star Emma Raducanu is taking her time in finding a new coach, despite having been without an official team for over a month. The 22-year-old confirmed in late January that she had parted ways with Nick Cavaday, who was forced to step away due to health issues.

Raducanu has gained a reputation for frequently changing coaches early in her career, with Cavaday being one of many short-term partnerships. However, Laura Robson believes there’s no need for urgency, particularly given Raducanu’s solid performances in 2025 so far.

Laura Robson: “She’s in No Rush”

In her Sky Sports column, Robson dismissed concerns over Raducanu’s coaching situation, emphasizing that a new hire should only happen if it’s the right fit.

“She is competing really well and making sure she’s trying to do the right things on the court. I don’t think she’s in any rush, really, to employ someone new just for the sake of it. It has to make sense for her and it has to be the right person.”

Robson also pointed out that the pool of elite coaches willing to travel full-time is limited:

“There aren’t too many amazing coaches around who can commit full-time, so options are pretty limited. You wouldn’t want to go into a new partnership without 100% confidence.”

Raducanu’s Mixed Start to 2025

Raducanu showed flashes of brilliance at the Australian Open, where she reached the third round with straight-sets victories over Ekaterina Alexandrova and Amanda Anisimova. However, she ran into Iga Swiatek, who dominated their match 6-1, 6-0 en route to the semifinals.

Since then, she has been working with Roman Kelecic, a coach she previously trained with before turning professional in 2018. Kelecic rejoined her team ahead of the Abu Dhabi Open, but Raducanu suffered an early exit against Marketa Vondrousova.

That loss was part of a difficult stretch, as she endured three consecutive first-round defeats leading up to the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. However, she rebounded in Dubai with an impressive victory over Maria Sakkari before falling to Karolina Muchova in a match where she became visibly emotional after spotting a spectator in the crowd exhibiting “fixated behavior.”

Encouraging Signs Ahead of Indian Wells

While Raducanu’s results have been inconsistent, the biggest positive is that she is competing injury-free after struggling with fitness issues throughout 2022 and 2023. With her ranking improving to World No. 55, she has secured a direct entry into the Indian Wells main draw, which begins on Sunday.

Last year, she reached the third round in California before losing to Aryna Sabalenka. Now, with a string of matches under her belt and a newfound stretch of good health, Raducanu will look to build momentum as she continues her 2025 campaign.
