Emma Raducanu’s Losing Streak Isn’t as Bad as It Looks
Emma Raducanu is currently enduring the longest losing streak of her professional career, having lost four consecutive matches. While at first glance this may seem concerning, a deeper look at her recent results suggests that her struggles may not be as dire as they appear.
The 22-year-old’s rough patch began at the Australian Open, where she reached the third round before falling to world No. 2 and five-time Grand Slam champion Iga Swiatek in a brutal 6-1, 6-0 defeat. Despite the lopsided scoreline, Raducanu had never advanced that far in Melbourne before, making it a small milestone in her comeback season.
Following the Australian Open, Raducanu faced a series of tough draws. In Singapore, she suffered a narrow three-set loss to Cristina Bucsa, going down 5-7, 7-5, 7-5 in a tightly contested match that lasted three hours.
Her next match in Abu Dhabi saw her take on reigning Wimbledon champion Marketa Vondrousova in the opening round. The battle between Grand Slam winners ended in a straight-sets loss for Raducanu, 6-3, 6-4.
Most recently, Raducanu was handed another difficult draw in Doha, where she faced an in-form Ekaterina Alexandrova, who had just won the title in Linz. The Brit had beaten Alexandrova earlier in the year but was unable to repeat the feat, losing 6-3, 7-5. Since then, Alexandrova has proven her form by defeating world No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka and No. 5 Jessica Pegula.
While the four-match skid is far from ideal, perspective is key. Two of her losses have come against fellow Grand Slam champions, while Alexandrova has been on an impressive run, toppling some of the world’s best.
Raducanu will be eager to regain confidence and snap her losing streak, but her performances haven’t been as poor as the numbers suggest. She’ll get another shot at redemption next week at the WTA 1000 in Dubai, where she has received a wildcard entry.
