Gauff draws first blood for USA at United Cup

Coco Gauff, the world No. 3 and 2023 U.S. Open champion, secured a commanding victory over Leylah Fernandez, defeating her 6-3, 6-2. This win gave Team USA an early lead in their United Cup campaign in Perth.

Gauff’s performance was marked by her exceptional court coverage and powerful baseline play. She broke Fernandez’s serve early in the first set to lead 2-1 and maintained her advantage, saving two break points at 3-2. In the second set, Gauff quickly established a 3-0 lead and remained unbroken throughout the match, losing just four points on her first serve.

Reflecting on her decision to participate in the United Cup instead of defending her title in Auckland, Gauff cited the opportunity for higher-level competition and the chance to play in a team environment as key factors. She expressed her enjoyment of team competitions and emphasized her focus on preparing for the upcoming Australian Open.

Following Gauff’s win, Taylor Fritz faced Felix Auger-Aliassime. Despite taking the first set, Fritz was unable to secure victory, with Auger-Aliassime mounting a comeback to win 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. This result leveled the tie between the USA and Canada, leading to a decisive mixed doubles match.

In the mixed doubles, Gauff and Fritz teamed up against Fernandez and Auger-Aliassime. The American duo triumphed with a 7-6(2), 7-5 win, clinching the tie for the USA. Gauff noted their improvement as the match progressed, stating, “I felt we got better the longer the match went.”

 

Team USA is set to face Croatia in their next Group A match on Tuesday, with the outcome determining their progression in the tournament.
