Gerwyn Price has admitted he was left stunned after being handed a rare PDC ‘Gold Card’, describing the moment as one he never expected to experience during his darts career.
The former world champion and ex-world number one was presented with the special honour following his long-standing contribution to the sport, joining a very small group of players to receive the recognition from the Professional Darts Corporation.
Speaking after the announcement, Price revealed the award came as a complete surprise.
“I genuinely couldn’t believe it,” Price said. “It’s not something you ever think about when you’re playing. You just focus on winning games and trying to be the best you can.”
The Gold Card is one of the PDC’s most exclusive distinctions, typically reserved for players who have made an exceptional impact on the sport over a sustained period. It recognises not only success on the oche, but also influence, longevity and contribution to darts’ global growth.
Price’s career certainly fits the criteria. Since switching codes and joining the PDC, the Welshman has won multiple major titles, lifted the World Darts Championship, reached world number one, and helped bring unprecedented attention to darts in Wales.
Known for his intensity and emotional style, Price has often divided opinion among fans, but his achievements and consistency at the elite level are undeniable.
Reflecting on the honour, he added:
“I’ve had my ups and downs, and I know I’m not everyone’s cup of tea, but this means a lot. To be recognised like this by the PDC is very special.”
The Gold Card also carries practical benefits, including protection of playing status and recognition of a player’s standing within the organisation — something Price admitted he hadn’t given much thought to until now.
“I didn’t even know it was a thing I could get,” he laughed. “So to be told I’ve earned one is incredible.”
