Gian van Veen issues health update after undergoing kidney stones surgery and pulling out of Premier League Darts event
Gian van Veen is determined to compete at Thursday night’s Premier League Darts event in Berlin as he continues his recovery from kidney stones.
The 23-year-old withdrew from last week’s night in Dublin after being hospitalised with the painful condition, raising concerns over whether he would be fit enough to travel for night eight in the German capital.
His absence would significantly alter the dynamics of the eight-player competition, but Van Veen — who was beaten by Luke Littler in the 2026 World Championship final — is keen to avoid missing back-to-back events.
Currently ranked world No.3, he is scheduled to face Gerwyn Price and knows he must start picking up points to keep his hopes alive of reaching the O2 Arena play-offs in London on May 28.
Van Veen shared a video on social media showing himself back at the dartboard, offering an update on his recovery following surgery.
He admitted fatigue remains a major challenge and that a late decision will be made on his participation, stressing that his health comes first.
He said: “Small steps. Every day.
“Following the surgery to remove my kidney stones, recovery has been a process that requires patience.
“Unfortunately, that is something that does not come easy when all you want to do is compete in this packed schedule.
“However, the fatigue is real. My energy levels are still lower than I hoped and every day I have to be smart about how I use it.
“But where my body allows it, I am on the board — practising, working and rebuilding to get back to where I want to be.
“These clips are a small glimpse of that process. It is not where I want to be yet, but it is progress — and right now progress is everything.
“Berlin is the goal. Walking out on that Premier League stage and making my comeback at the oche is what is driving me through every session, every day.
“I am doing everything to be there this Thursday. However, I need to listen to my body and not rush into any decisions.
“As important as the Premier League is, my health is more important.
“The will is there. The motivation has definitely never left. Now it is about making sure everything aligns in time.
“Berlin, I hope to see you on Thursday.”
Elsewhere, Josh Rock — still searching for his first win after seven matches in his debut campaign — will look to break his duck against table-topper Jonny Clayton in the opening quarter-final.
