“He had a high fever and we had to consult a doctor” – Holger Rune’s mother gives explanation for the Danish star’s early Rotterdam exit
Holger Rune Battled Illness During ABN AMRO Open, Says Mother
Danish tennis star Holger Rune was reportedly unwell during his disappointing run at the 2025 ABN AMRO Open, according to his mother, Aneke Rune.
Rune, the tournament’s fifth seed, initially showed no signs of trouble, dispatching Lorenzo Sonego in straight sets in the opening round. However, he struggled in his second-round loss to Spaniard Pedro Martinez, marking an early exit from the ATP 500 event in Rotterdam.
Rune Was Battling the Flu
Speaking to Danish media outlet TV2, Aneke Rune revealed that her son fell ill after competing in the Davis Cup qualifiers for Denmark the previous week.
“He caught the flu in Denmark after the Davis Cup, and he wasn’t feeling well in the match against Sonego,” she explained. “He had a high fever, and we had to consult a doctor. After that, he stayed in bed all day.”
Rune himself admitted to having a rough night before his match, suggesting he wasn’t fully recovered by the time he faced Martinez.
Slow Start to 2025 for Rune
Rune, currently ranked World No. 12, has struggled to find momentum in 2025. His season started with a first-round exit at the Brisbane International, followed by a fourth-round loss to eventual champion Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open.
Despite a challenging start to the year, Rune will be hoping to regain his top form as the ATP season progresses.
