Darts Icon Warns Luke Littler to Avoid Burnout Amid Intense Schedule
Luke Littler has taken the darts world by storm since bursting onto the scene 15 months ago at the World Championships. The 18-year-old sensation has already claimed five major titles, including two PDC Masters crowns, and made history as the youngest player to hit a televised nine-dart finish.
However, darts legend Dennis Priestley has cautioned Littler about the risks of burnout, urging him to consider taking a break amid his relentless schedule.
The Pressure of Constant Competition
Littler, who currently sits atop the 2025 Premier League standings, has been competing week in and week out across multiple tournaments. Priestley, a two-time world champion, believes this demanding schedule could take its toll on the young star.
“Luke says he didn’t pick up his darts for a week, but with so many midweek and weekend competitions, he probably doesn’t have time to practice properly. He’s constantly traveling and playing, which might mean he doesn’t need as much practice, but he still has to be careful about burnout.”
The Warrington wonderkid is also closing in on Luke Humphries for the world No. 1 ranking. However, Priestley believes it’s only a matter of time before Littler claims the top spot.
Littler’s Rise and Van Gerwen’s Decline
Littler’s stunning World Championship final victory over Michael van Gerwen in January marked a turning point in both players’ careers, according to Priestley.
“Van Gerwen won’t get back to the level he needs to compete with Littler. He’s had an incredible career, but Littler has age on his side and makes it look easy at times. Van Gerwen can still win events, but when it comes to matching Littler’s level, I don’t think he has any hope.”
What’s Next for Littler?
Littler is set to continue his Premier League title defense, with key upcoming matches in Newcastle, Berlin, and Manchester. As he balances his growing status, endorsement deals, and an intense playing schedule, managing fatigue will be crucial to sustaining his dominance.
Will Littler take Priestley’s advice and slow down, or will he continue his meteoric rise without pause? Only time will tell. 🎯🔥
