Matteo Berrettini Stands by Jannik Sinner Amid Suspension Controversy
Matteo Berrettini has publicly backed fellow Italian Jannik Sinner following the world No. 1’s three-month suspension. Sinner was initially found to have “no fault or negligence” by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), but the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) appealed the decision, pushing for a stricter penalty.
A final ruling was expected in April, with Sinner facing a potential one- to two-year ban. However, he reached a settlement with WADA, accepting a three-month suspension that began last week. As a result, the 23-year-old will return to competition in early May at the Rome Open.
Berrettini: “Jannik is stronger than all of us”
Despite the controversy surrounding the case, Berrettini expressed unwavering support for his countryman in an interview with Il Corriere della Sera.
“I believe in sport. I don’t know what happened between the various organizations, I’m not a lawyer, and it’s not my place,” Berrettini said.
“I’m only sorry for a guy like Sinner who, as the papers show, was the victim of a mistake. But Jannik is stronger than all of us… he’ll be back.”
The former Wimbledon finalist also acknowledged the difficult period Sinner is facing but emphasized his belief that the failed tests were unintentional.
“I have always supported Sinner and believe that the positive tests were the result of a mistake,” he added. “I can imagine that it is a difficult time for him. Have I written to him? No, I prefer to respect his desire for privacy.”
Berrettini to Face Djokovic in Qatar Open Debut
While Sinner prepares for his return, Berrettini is focused on his own comeback as he makes his Qatar Open debut on Tuesday. His opening-round match will be a tough test, as he faces world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in what will be their fifth career meeting.
The head-to-head record heavily favors Djokovic at 4-0, but Berrettini will be hoping to spring an upset as he looks to regain his best form.
