Holger Rune is working to regain his form in the early stages of the 2025 season. The former Top 5 player is still striving to reach the level that saw him stun the world in late 2022 when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the Rolex Paris Masters final. However, he appears to be on the right path toward re-establishing himself as a top contender.
The young Dane advanced to the round of 16 at the 2025 Australian Open, where he fell in four sets to world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, missing a crucial opportunity to capitalize on the Italian’s physical struggles between the second and third sets.
Following his Grand Slam campaign, Rune participated in Denmark’s Davis Cup tie against Serbia, playing a pivotal role in his team’s remarkable comeback from a 0-2 deficit. Currently ranked world No. 14, he is competing in the Rotterdam ATP 500 this week, where he began his campaign with a victory over Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego.
Rune will face Spanish player Pedro Martinez today, aiming to secure a spot in the quarterfinals of the prestigious Dutch ATP 500 tournament.
Rune Returns to Barcelona
Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the 2022 Rolex Paris Masters champion will compete in this year’s Barcelona Open. The 21-year-old Dane has opted to return to the esteemed Catalonian tournament on red clay after a four-year absence.
Rune last played the Barcelona Open in 2021 when he was still an emerging talent. After successfully navigating the qualifiers, he bowed out in the first round against Spanish veteran Albert Ramos.
The Barcelona ATP 500 boasts a rich history and tradition, consistently attracting some of the world’s top players. Its center court is named after Spanish legend Rafael Nadal, who dominated the tournament for many years.
Rune will not be the only marquee name in the 2025 edition, as Carlos Alcaraz, Casper Ruud, and Andrey Rublev have also been confirmed to participate.
While Rune’s most significant career title came on hard courts, red clay remains his preferred surface, making his return to Barcelona a highly anticipated event.
