Holger Rune put in the hard work during the off-season to set himself up for a strong 2025 campaign, but his results so far have fallen short of expectations. His Australian Open run ended in the round of 16 against world No. 1 Jannik Sinner, a match that may have left the young Dane with some regrets.
Rune had an opportunity to capitalize on Sinner’s physical struggles between the second and third sets but failed to take full advantage. The Italian stayed within reach before asserting his dominance in the latter stages of the match.
The 2022 Rolex Paris Masters champion then competed at the ATP 500 in Rotterdam last week, where misfortune struck again. After a solid opening win over Lorenzo Sonego, Rune was favored against Pedro Martinez but came down with a fever the night before their match, leaving him unable to perform at his best.
Despite exhaustion and a sleepless night, Rune chose to compete but was ultimately overwhelmed by the Spaniard.
Adding to his early-season struggles was a first-round exit in Brisbane, making it difficult to paint a positive picture of his 2025 start.
Looking Ahead
The 21-year-old has now traveled to South America for the ATP event in Buenos Aires, where the clay surface should complement his game.
Speaking to the official ATP website, Rune shared his thoughts: “I’ve already had my first practice here in Buenos Aires, and I’m working on adapting to the conditions as quickly as possible. The last time I played here was years ago, and a lot has changed.
Red clay is my favorite surface, and the next Grand Slam will be in Paris.”
The world No. 12 added, “I was hoping for a better result in Rotterdam, but unfortunately, I got sick and couldn’t play at my best. Now, I feel good.”
