Holger Rune issues public apology after defeat at the Argentina Open as he suggests he will take break from tennis
Holger Rune Reflects on Disappointing Argentina Open Exit
Holger Rune’s frustrating start to 2025 continued with an early exit from the Argentina Open, leaving the Dane deeply disappointed.
Having played in four tournaments this season, Rune has yet to advance beyond the fourth round, and his latest defeat in Buenos Aires marked one of his most disappointing performances of the year.
Rune Falls to Home Favorite Mariano Navone
Facing Argentinian wildcard Mariano Navone, Rune struggled to find his rhythm against an opponent fueled by passionate home support.
Navone stormed through the opening set, winning the first three games and the last three games, while also saving three crucial break points.
The second set was a much closer contest, with both players holding serve to force a tiebreak. However, Rune faltered at the key moment, managing just two points as Navone closed out a 6-1, 7-6(2) victory, handing the World No. 12 his second straight loss.
Rune Apologizes to Fans, Admits He Played Too Soon After Illness
After the match, Rune took to social media to apologize to fans, admitting he rushed his return after suffering from influenza during the Rotterdam Open.
“Looking back, I think it was too early to play after my influenza last week,” Rune wrote. “My shoulder was not working, and my whole body felt extremely vulnerable. I will take the time to get proper rest now.”
“When the body isn’t there, the brain shuts down. I’m very sorry I couldn’t deliver what I wanted on court today. Sorry, Argentina.”
Despite the disappointing result, Rune expressed gratitude for the warm reception he received in Buenos Aires:
“Absolutely not the result I wanted tonight. Thank you, Argentina, for having me. You have a beautiful country, and I felt welcome here.”
Rune Questions Future Argentina Open Appearances
In his post-match press conference, Rune cast doubt over whether he would return to the Argentina Open in the future.
While praising aspects of the tournament’s organization and atmosphere, the former Grand Slam quarter-finalist was critical of the court conditions.
“The event is well organized, but the courts are not good at all,” he said. “Apart from that, everything is fine—great atmosphere, fantastic weather. But I don’t know if I will play here again. I will review my calendar.”
With Rune now shifting his focus to recovery and upcoming tournaments, the Danish star will look to regain form and confidence as the 2025 season progresses.
