Holger Rune Struggles to Gain Momentum in 2025

Fans had high hopes for Holger Rune at the start of the 2025 season, but the young Danish star has yet to make a significant leap forward. So far, his results have closely mirrored those of last year, raising concerns about his progress.

The 2022 Rolex Paris Masters champion suffered an early exit at the Brisbane International and was stopped in the fourth round of the Australian Open by world No. 1 Jannik Sinner—despite the Italian battling illness that day.

Rune showed promise at the Rotterdam ATP 500 last week, opening with a solid win against Lorenzo Sonego, but his run ended abruptly in the next round against Pedro Martinez, partly due to a fever he had developed the night before.

Following the Dutch tournament, Rune had little time to adjust before heading to Buenos Aires, where he hopes to gain valuable ranking points on his favorite surface—red clay—ahead of the French Open.

Rune Reflects on His Form and Path Forward

A year and a half ago, Rune was widely seen as one of the biggest threats to Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz in the next generation of tennis. However, his rapid rise has stalled, and he’s searching for answers.

In an interview with Olé ahead of his Buenos Aires opener against local favorite Mariano Navone, Rune shared his thoughts on his current level:

“I’m a player who works constantly. If I knew exactly what I was missing to reach Sinner and Alcaraz’s level, I would already be there. My team and I are trying to figure out how to improve certain aspects of my game, and I have to trust this process.

I’ve resumed working with my former coach, and the feeling is really positive. I can sense my level improving with each match, and I believe I’m heading in the right direction.”
