Holger Rune has revealed he underwent dietary testing following a string of frustrating health setbacks, including a bout of food poisoning that forced him to retire from his opening match at the Monte Carlo Masters.
The 21-year-old Dane, who reached the Monte Carlo final just last year, had high hopes for another strong run in the Principality. But his 2025 campaign was cut short as illness struck again—this time during his clash against Nuno Borges.
“I feel hunted with sickness. Unbearable not to be able to finish up in one of my absolute favorite tournaments,” Rune posted in frustration on Instagram Stories after the match.
Rune Taking Action After Repeated Health Issues
This isn’t the first time Rune’s season has been derailed by illness. Earlier in the year, he managed just one win across Rotterdam and Buenos Aires, later revealing he was battling a virus.
Looking for answers and hoping to avoid future setbacks, Rune decided to undergo tests to determine how his diet might be affecting his health.
“It’s quite annoying, but I think you can learn from those situations,” Rune told reporters ahead of the Barcelona Open.
“I did some tests to see what foods I should eat and what to avoid. Maybe it’s just bad luck, but it’s very frustrating—especially in Monaco, where I’ve played well and love competing. I’m staying focused on the next goal: playing well in Barcelona.”
Back on Court in Barcelona
Rune, currently ranked No. 12 in the world and seeded sixth in Barcelona, will face Albert Ramos-Vinolas in the first round. After early exits in both Buenos Aires and Monte Carlo, the young star is still searching for his first clay-court victory of the 2025 season.
This marks Rune’s sixth straight appearance at the Barcelona Open. His best result there came in 2023 when he reached the final.
