Jessica Pegula Slams WADA-Sinner Agreement, Calls Process ‘Completely Broken’

American tennis star Jessica Pegula has become the latest high-profile player to criticize the agreement between the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and men’s world number one Jannik Sinner. The deal, made public on Sunday, will see Sinner serve a three-month suspension after testing positive for the banned substance clostebol in March 2024.

WADA confirmed the case resolution in an official statement: “The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) confirms that it has entered into a case resolution agreement in the case of Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner, with the player accepting a three-month period of ineligibility for an anti-doping rule violation that led to him testing positive for clostebol, a prohibited substance, in March 2024.”

The agreement has sparked backlash from fans and fellow players, with notable names like Nick Kyrgios, Stan Wawrinka, and Daniil Medvedev voicing their disapproval. Pegula, currently competing in the Dubai Masters, has now joined the chorus of critics, arguing that the decision highlights a deep flaw in the system.

“Whether you think he did it or not, or whatever side you’re on, the process just seems to be completely not a process,” Pegula stated. “It seems like they just make up their own ruling based on whatever factors they choose. I don’t understand how that’s fair for players when there’s so much inconsistency. If you’re clean or not, the process is completely broken.”

She went on to emphasize the damage such rulings can cause to an athlete’s career: “I feel like they have so much power to ruin someone’s career. There needs to be serious reform because it just seems really unfair. I don’t think any of the players trust the process at all right now. Zero. It’s just a horrible look for the sport.”
