‘How on earth’ – World No2 Alexander Zverev fuming as luggage ends up 8,700 miles away from tennis tournament
Alexander Zverev Left Frustrated as Luggage Ends Up in Maldives Instead of Argentina
Alexander Zverev was left fuming after his luggage took an unexpected detour—landing thousands of miles away from his intended destination.
The world No. 2 traveled to Buenos Aires to compete in the Argentina Open, but upon arrival, he was informed that his bags had been misplaced. To make matters worse, instead of arriving in the Argentine capital, his luggage ended up in the Maldives—roughly 8,700 miles away.
Despite his frustration, the 27-year-old managed to keep a sense of humor about the situation. Taking to Instagram, Zverev sarcastically vented: “Could anyone explain to me how on earth it is possible for me to fly from Rome to Buenos Aires but my bags instead of coming with me being sent to the Maldives? I guess they need a vacation already.”
Tournament officials have granted Zverev an extra 24 hours to retrieve his belongings, and he’ll have some additional breathing room as he received a first-round bye. He is set to face either Dusan Lajovic or Roberto Carballes Baena in the second round.
Zverev is aiming to bounce back after his heartbreaking Australian Open final defeat to Jannik Sinner. That loss marked his third Grand Slam final setback, following his 2020 US Open defeat to Dominic Thiem and last year’s French Open loss to Carlos Alcaraz.
Reflecting on his latest near-miss, Zverev admitted: “It was a difficult moment for me. Now, for the third time, seeing somebody lift the trophy and me standing next to them is difficult because there’s nothing more I want than to be able to hold one of those trophies in my hands.”
Now, as he sets his sights on clay-court success in Buenos Aires, Zverev will first hope for a small but significant victory—getting his luggage back from its unexpected tropical getaway.
