Concerns Raised Over Lengthy Medical Timeouts at Australian Open
Following lengthy medical timeouts taken by both Novak Djokovic and Jannik Sinner during the tournament, calls have been made for stricter enforcement of the rules.
Djokovic, who appeared to be struggling with a thigh injury, took a medical timeout during his quarter-final against Carlos Alcaraz, leading to criticism from commentators like John McEnroe, who suggested this was a tactic employed by the Serbian.
However, former Australian Open tournament director Paul McNamee expressed greater concern over Sinner’s extended 11-minute medical timeout, stating that such lengthy interruptions disrupt the flow of the match and are unfair to opponents.
McNamee emphasized the importance of adhering to the three-minute time limit for medical timeouts and called for stricter enforcement of the rules.
Both Djokovic and Sinner are expected to be fit for their respective semi-finals against Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton.
