Iga Swiatek on Controlling Emotions: “No Point in Smashing Rackets”

Iga Swiatek continues her dominance at the Qatar Open, defeating Elena Rybakina 6-2, 7-5 to advance to the semifinals. The world No. 2, a three-time defending champion, is now just two wins away from securing a fourth consecutive title in Doha.

Despite moments of frustration against Rybakina, Swiatek maintained her composure—something she has worked hard to master. After her second-round win over Maria Sakkari, the five-time Grand Slam champion spoke about managing emotions on court, particularly why she never smashes rackets.

“And you won’t probably [ever see me smash a racket].”

Known as one of the most mentally resilient players on the WTA Tour, Swiatek explained that there isn’t a fixed routine for managing frustration, as every match presents different challenges.

“There are many things that can throw you off, and you always have to react differently depending on the situation.”

However, one thing remains constant—she refuses to take her emotions out on her equipment.

“It doesn’t make sense for me to throw the racket. It’s not the racket’s fault, you know?”

Swiatek also highlighted her desire to set a positive example for young players, admitting that she did break rackets in her youth but has since worked through her emotions with mental training.

“That’s why I do all the mental training—to be a better player and to learn how to deal with this stuff.”

Rather than letting frustration take over, Swiatek prefers to channel her emotions into something positive.

“There’s no point in letting negativity take control. It’s better to work through those emotions and convert them into something useful.”

Swiatek Awaits Semifinal Opponent
