Alexander Zverev Embraces South American Clay Swing at Argentina Open
Alexander Zverev has drawn plenty of attention upon his arrival in Buenos Aires as he prepares to compete in the Argentina Open for the first time. While the German previously visited the country for exhibition matches in 2019 alongside Roger Federer, this marks his official debut on the tournament’s clay courts.
Not many top-ranked players make the journey to South America after the Australian Open, given the surface shift from hard courts to clay and the long travel. However, Zverev, currently ranked World No. 2, has opted for a schedule change, adding the Golden Swing to his itinerary.
“I love the football atmosphere—Argentina is incredibly passionate about sports,” Zverev said. “I was here a few years ago with Roger, and the energy was unbelievable. I’m excited to experience it again and hope the crowd gets involved.”
Zverev Excited for Passionate Argentine Fans
The three-time Grand Slam finalist is well aware of the fervent support for local players in Argentina, but he hopes for a warm reception as he takes to the court.
“Every country wants a local player to win, and here, they’ll be rooting for an Argentine,” he acknowledged. “As long as the passion for the sport is there, that’s what matters. Passion brings excitement.”
Despite the allure of Argentine culture, Zverev remains fully focused on his tournament preparation.
“We thought about going out for dinner last night, and we’ll probably go out again today. I want to experience the Argentine lifestyle, but my main goal is playing well. I’m 100% committed to preparing and competing at my best.”
Supporting Tennis Growth in South America
Zverev also emphasized the importance of hosting ATP tournaments in South America, noting the rich tennis history of Argentina and Brazil.
“I think it’s very important to have tournaments here, to have this clay-court swing in South America,” he stated. “Tennis is a global sport, and this region has produced great players. These tournaments are crucial for developing the sport and for the ATP Tour in general.”
With his first official participation in the Argentina Open, Zverev is eager to soak in the local energy and battle for the title. Whether the Buenos Aires crowd embraces him remains to be seen, but one thing is certain—Zverev is ready to leave his mark on South American clay.
