“I think it develops the confidence”: Emma Raducanu credits coaching staff’s role in gameplay after impressive outing at Miami Open
Emma Raducanu Credits Coaching Staff for Miami Open Resurgence
Emma Raducanu believes her new coaching team is beginning to make a noticeable impact on her performances, as she continues her strong run at the 2025 Miami Open.
The 22-year-old Brit was once hailed as tennis’ next big star after her stunning 2021 US Open triumph at just 18 years old. However, injuries and inconsistency plagued her rise, preventing her from maintaining momentum. After returning to the tour in late 2023, Raducanu struggled to find form, making multiple coaching changes along the way.
Now, competing in Miami, she has reached the fourth round after receiving a walkover against McCartney Kessler in the last 32. Speaking to Sky Sports, Raducanu expressed confidence that her new coaching setup is helping her game evolve. She also highlighted the importance of staying injury-free, which has allowed her to refine key aspects of her performance.
Raducanu: “I Haven’t Had Any Major Injuries”
“I think the main thing is I haven’t had any major injuries, which has been my biggest struggle over the last few years,” Raducanu said. “My body feels good right now. I’ve also improved my movement in the corners, getting to more balls and challenging myself. That builds confidence and helps me develop better hand skills to execute shots when I get there.”
Embracing the Underdog Mentality
Raducanu also spoke about her newfound perspective, embracing the underdog role in Miami.
“I’m really enjoying it,” she said. “The past few years, I’ve come here and never won a match, so it was a challenge going into the first round. But I’m happy to have built some momentum with a few good performances. No matter who I face next, I’ll probably be the underdog—so I’m going to relish that.”
Next Up: Amanda Anisimova
Raducanu will now face Amanda Anisimova in the last 16, after the American No. 17 seed secured her spot with a hard-fought victory over Mirra Andreeva (7-6, 2-6, 6-3).
As Raducanu continues to rediscover her best tennis, her Miami Open run offers a promising glimpse into what could be a resurgent season ahead.
