Henri Lansbury on Jack Grealish’s Future: A Return to Aston Villa Could Happen—At the Right Time
Former Aston Villa midfielder Henri Lansbury believes Jack Grealish could one day return to Villa Park, but only when the timing is right in his career.
Grealish, who played a pivotal role in Aston Villa’s return to the Premier League and their subsequent survival in the top flight, left his boyhood club in 2021 to join Manchester City for £100 million. Since then, he has won three Premier League titles and the Champions League, playing a key role in City’s historic treble-winning season in 2023.
Grealish’s Future at Manchester City in Question
Now in his fourth season at the Etihad, Grealish’s future at City is uncertain. Reports suggest he is open to a loan move to Newcastle United next season. With two years remaining on his contract from next summer, City may not be in a rush to make a decision, but speculation around his next step continues to grow.
Lansbury, who played alongside Grealish at Villa, believes a return to Villa Park is a possibility—but only when it makes sense for both the player and the club.
Lansbury on Grealish’s Journey
Reflecting on Grealish’s move to City, Lansbury said:
“The move to Manchester City was unreal for Jack. He deserves every bit of success because he is that player. But at City, he’s in a system where teams put 11 men and their dog behind the ball. At Villa, it was just ‘give it to Jack and let him do his thing.’ It’s a completely different experience for him now, but I think he’s been fantastic.”
Despite his struggles for game time in recent months, Lansbury insists Grealish should be proud of his achievements:
“He’s won three Premier League titles, a Champions League, and a treble. He can’t be unhappy with that. He’s one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet and a very good friend of mine.”
Would Grealish Ever Return to Villa?
While a return to Aston Villa is something many fans dream of, Lansbury believes it would have to happen at the right moment.
“I think it’s something he’d want to do, but only when the timing is right. For me, his standout moment in a Villa shirt was that goal against Birmingham—the game where he got punched. That was a special moment: a local lad scoring in the biggest derby.”
