Ian Wright shares what Jack Grealish did for England vs Finland that he rarely does for Man City

Manchester City wideman Jack Grealish played throughout the entirety of England’s 2-0 win against Finland in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday.

Grealish seems to have gained Lee Carsley’s trust as his go-to number 10 as of now — with top-class attacking midfielders like Phil Foden, Jude Bellingham and Cole Palmer being ruled out of the Three Lions squad.

The City technician, who tends to stay out wide at club level seems to be viewed as a player who would help England in a more central role.

Much like during his display against the Republic of Ireland, the £300,000-a-week man was one of his country’s best players.

As per Statman Dave on X, Grealish made six passes into Finland’s box, completed two out of his three take-ons, created two chances, had eight touches in the opposition box, engaged in four defensive actions and recorded a pass accuracy of 92%.

So far, the former Aston Villa talisman seems to be thriving under Lee Carsley.

Wright makes intriguing Man City superstar observation after England beat Finland

Since returning from his early-season knock, the 29-year-old has made three successive starts.

The three-time Premier League winner seems to be playing with the same degree of sharpness he was for City in pre-season.

Grealish looked like he was playing with a real purpose against Finland — trying to take on players, switching the play with his expansive passing, combing brilliantly with his England teammates and being a threat in the final third.

After being handed back-to-back starts by Lee Carsley, the silky technician must be feeling fitter than when he was first embarked on international duty.

Grealish admitted he was not fully fit after the Three Lions’ 2-0 victory against the Republic of Ireland.

Ian Wright said on ITV Sport that Grealish does not play with the same degree of directness and drive that he did for England against both Finland and the Irish.

“Yeah, I thought again today, he was trying to be progressive, he was taking people on, he was creating things, exactly what you want to see him doing, getting past people, what we know he’s great at doing.”

“We haven’t seen so much of it at City but we’ve seen in the last couple of games for England and again, it comes down to the opposition but it’s great to see him playing and playing in that style and hopefully, it can be enough to force him into his team.”

Jack Grealish seems freer as a number 10

Ian Wright’s claim perhaps does not completely hold true about Grealish when he is bang in form for Manchester City.

During City’s treble-winning season, the England international looked like a man on a mission.

However, Grealish’s ceiling as a player is somewhat capped when limited to a position — considering he rose to fame as a free spirit on the football pitch for Aston Villa.

As a number 10, the decorated attacker has certainly looked freer as he is allowed to both play centrally and drift into wide areas — the two zones of the pitch where he plays his best football.

Upon returning to the Etihad Stadium, Grealish will be hoping he can replicate his recent performances for England in a Manchester City shirt.
